"While files are expunged from the servers after 30 days if they're removed from a computer, your most recent backup snapshot will be retained for 6 months if your computer is completely unable to contact our servers (either it's shut off, or no internet connection). Thanks.ĭoesn't BackBlaze keep data for 30 days before being expunged? I am looking for an alternative if you think there is a better solution. I don't know that one is better than the other, but I'm pleased with how simple Backblaze is to set up and you can just forget about it and it seems to do it's job without problem, even when it is interrupted, the computer resets, etc. I just finished my initial back up of about 4TB of data and it's functioned really smoothly so far. I looked at Carbonite and Backblaze and ended up going with Backblaze, only for the reasons that they are a bit cheaper and I found their software really easy and straightforward to use. I've no experience with Carbonite but I was also a Crashplan user (which I liked) but am now being booted off as they are focusing on their business model only and not providing service to the consumer anymore. I highly recommend the ebook for its comprehensive coverage of all aspects of local and offsite Mac data backups. Joe goes into similar detail about Backblaze competitors as well as "Bring Your Own Software" data storage providers such as Amazon, Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage, Strongspace, etc. But it’s still, in my opinion, superior to the competition-and if ease of setup is your main consideration, Backblaze is the one to beat. And it fails to back up or restore some Mac metadata (such as ownership and permissions, creation dates, and Finder tags). In addition, Backblaze stores old versions and deleted files for only 30 days, which is shorter than I prefer. (In fact, the restore-by-mail option is effectively free if you send back the drive after restoring your data, Backblaze refunds the cost of the service.) Either way, a downside to Backblaze is that when restoring files, you must manually move them to where they belong it won’t put them back in place automatically. To restore files, you can download them (individually or as a ZIP archive) from the web or have Back- blaze mail you the files overnight on an external hard drive. You can adjust what’s in and what’s out in System Preferences > Backblaze. It excludes system files and items in your /Applications folder, among others. By default, Backblaze backs up all your important files without requiring configuration other than entering your email address. Setup is almost trivially easy, and I’ve found it to be speedy and reliable. Backblaze charges $5 per month or $50 per year (per computer) for unlimited data storage. This is what Joe Kissell has to say about Backblaze in the recently released Take Control of Backing Up Your Mac (3.0) from Take Control Books:īackblaze: This service is my top pick, now that CrashPlan is off the table, and it’s what I use for my own family.
